Are implicit and explicit measures of self-esteem related? A meta-analysis for the Name-Letter Test

چکیده

A meta-analysis of the empirical literature was conducted to examine the strength of empirical associations between explicit (questionnaire) measures of self-esteem and one of the most frequently used implicit self-esteem measures – the Name-Letter Test (Nuttin, 1985). Results indicated that the NLT was consistently, albeit weakly, related to explicit self-esteem measures. Also, increasing the accessibility of explicit self-esteem (by administering the questionnaire measure prior to the implicit measure) increased the magnitude of association. Discussion centers on the role of psychometric factors in dissociations between explicit and implicit self-esteem measures. Implications for measurement and conceptualization of self-esteem also are discussed. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Current Research in Social Psychology

Pelham, Koole, Hardin, Hetts, Seah, and DeHart (2005) found that implicit and explicit selfesteem correlated more strongly among women than men. The goal of this study was to replicate this finding and test whether it was due to gender differences in socially desirable responding (SDR). Ninety-nine German students completed measures of implicit self-esteem (Implicit Association Test and name-le...

Implicit but not explicit self-esteem predicts future depressive symptomatology.

To date, research on the predictive validity of implicit self-esteem for depressive relapse is very sparse. In the present study, we assessed implicit self-esteem using the Name Letter Preference Task and explicit self-esteem using the Rosenberg self-esteem scale in a group of currently depressed patients, formerly depressed individuals, and never depressed controls. In addition, we examined th...

[Relationships between explicit/implicit self-esteem discrepancy and measures of depression, loneliness, and in-group favoritism].

The present study focused on the discrepancy between explicit self-esteem and implicit self-esteem, using the Name Letter Task with 86 graduate students. In line with suggestions from previous research, participants high in explicit self-esteem but low implicit self-esteem (called "defensive high self-esteem") showed higher in-group favoritism than participants who had high explicit and implici...

Changes of explicitly and implicitly measured self-esteem in the treatment of major depression: evidence for implicit self-esteem compensation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Self-esteem has been claimed to be an important factor in the development and maintenance of depression. Whereas explicit self-esteem is usually reduced in depressed individuals, studies on implicitly measured self-esteem in depression exhibit a more heterogeneous pattern of results, and the role of implicit self-esteem in depression is still ambiguous. Previous resear...

Implicit self-esteem: nature, measurement, and a new way forward.

Gaining insight into the nature and consequences of people's global self-evaluations (i.e., their self-esteem) has been fraught with difficulty. Nearly 2 decades ago, researchers suggested that such difficulties might be addressed by the development of a new class of measures designed to uncover implicit self-esteem. In this article, we evaluate the construct validity of the 2 most common measu...
